Loughborough University have recently migrated from Communigate Pro (an email/groupware server that allows access via lots of useful open protocols) to Microsoft Exchange (which doesn't). As a long-time user of Mozilla Thunderbird for email with the Lightning plugin for calendering, I wanted to get things working. This has always been a problem because Exchange doesn't support CalDav or similar, and Thunderbird/Lightning can't talk natively to Exchange. 
I've found a few solutions to this:
Mozilla Thunderbird. Users of Mozilla Thunderbird will be delighted to hear that there is a Thunderbird Filelink Addon! This Thunderbird extension makes it easy to send large attachments with Thunderbird by automatically uploading them first to a Nextcloud server and by then inserting the link into the body of your email. Microsoft Entourage is a discontinued e-mail client and personal information manager that was developed by Microsoft for Mac OS 8.5 and later. Microsoft first released Entourage in October 2000 as part of the Microsoft Office 2001 office suite; Office 98, the previous version of Microsoft Office for the classic Mac OS included Outlook Express 5. This can be accomplished by connecting to imap.exchange.mit.edu. (If this is the first time you are running Thunderbird, go on to step 2.) Under Tools Account Settings (on some versions Preferences Account Settings), click Account Actions then Add Mail Account. Result: The New Mail Account setup dialog box appears. Import Exchange to Thunderbird using an Exchange to Thunderbird Migration tool. Now you can backup your Exchange Server Mailbox into Thunderbird so that, you.
Davmail
I currently use a nifty little program called DavMail. This works by scraping the webmail interface (Outlook Web Access, OWA) and running local servers for various open protocols. I only use the CalDav interface, but it also provides POP/IMAP/SMTP for email and LDAP.For Loughborough users, all you need is the webmail URL: https://email.lboro.ac.uk/owa/

Andrea Bittau and Simon Schubert have recently developed a plugin that makes it all work without having to scrape the webmail site: Microsoft Exchange data provider for Thunderbird Lightning.This works via the new Exchange EWS (web services) interface, so presumably will only work with versions of Exchange which supporting EWS (2007 or later?).
For Loughborough users, you can enter the calendar address as https://LUNETLOGIN@auto where LOGIN is replaced by your username and not the first part of your email address (e.g. https://LUNETmpxxx@auto)
I've only started using this recently, because previous versions would work only immediately after the plugin was installed but not after that. They seem to have fixed that now.
ExQuilla
ExQuilla is another Thunderbird plugin using EWS, although I haven't tried this.Calendering is not available, as far as I could tell. TechRepublic have some decent-looking instructions for setting this up.
